Thanksgiving Thinking Maps and More
Ok so I LOVE thinking maps. If you haven't been trained on them, I certainly hope you can be and can begin to use them. Until then, there is a lot of information on the web about them. I have created this Thanksgiving packet with tons of thinking maps and much more!
For being a loyal follower, I have two free maps just for you! You can also download a preview at my TPT store (see below).
You can purchase the complete package here at my TPT store.

Common and Proper Nouns
I This is a busy week here at school. We have our Veteran's Day program tomorrow so we have practice today and there's not a lot of teaching time right now.
However, my 1st grade ELs have started common and proper nouns. Monday, we reviewed what a noun is and what singular and plural meant. Then we moved into common and proper. I was standing normally and I told them I was just common. A lot of people stood that way. Then, I stood very straight and tall. I told them I was being proper, like a queen, and a queen was VERY important. Just like a queen, some nouns are very important and their first letter needs to stand tall and straight (capital).
Then we did a sort. We used this one from Mrs. Wheeler's Store. The kids loved that my name was in it and that Sponge Bob was in it. ha!
Next we read Pete the Cat.
We talked about how Pete the Cat wasn't a common cat. He was important because he had a name and everyone knew him. Then we looked at a regular cat. I showed them several pictures of cats and told them they had to point to the correct cat. Of course they didn't know which one. Then I told them they didn't know because they were all common and there was no way to know which cat I wanted. Then I told them to point to Pete the Cat. I told them they knew him because he was special and had a capital letter.
We used some words from the story and we made up our own.
The next day, we watched a PowerPoint
I got from http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Noun-Game-202400.
Then, we completed this in our interactive notebooks. You can get your own copy at my TPT Store.

Nouns, Nouns, Nouns!!!!!
Whew! It's been a roller coaster of a month (October-now). Our principal has been out and we've had a retired principal in doing the principal's duties and another retired principal doing observations. So glad mine is over and I can focus on other things now. ;)
Over the passed few weeks my 1st grade ELs have been learning about singular and plural nouns. We started the week with a review of nouns, then we moved onto singular and plural.
As I told my observing principal, I work smarter, not harder, so I have used a lot of freebies that I found on Pinterest. This is my first year teaching 1st grade so I need EVERYTHING!
We first started with a sort. I used this freebie I found by Linda Nelson.
You can grab your free copy from Linda at Primary Inspiration
As I held up each picture I would say, "Is it 1 (and hold up 1 finger) or 2 or more"( I would hold up 2 fingers and then stretch my arms really wide) because I want them to know plural isn't just two.
Students then took turns helping me and putting it into a pocket chart (because that's really fun!)
The next day we reviewed singular and plural and then worked on an activity for our interactive notebooks. I got this from Nichole over at Rowdy in Room 300.
This was her kindergarten work but we used it in first grade. It was a great hands-on activity that was fun, yet educational.
Lastly, we wrapped up the week by adding one more activity to our interactive notebooks. I got this from Denise at Sunny Days in Second Grade.
They had to color, cut, glue, then make a list of singular or plural nouns behind the picture. I still had the sort in the pocket chart so kiddos who were still unsure of themselves were able to use those words.
